Shiraz: The True Australian Wine

Australia is quite famous for producing excellent quality wines such as Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay and of course Shiraz. Starting from Brisbane and continuing till Darwin, you can see many wine regions. Australian people feel themselves very proud because of excellent grape varieties and wine culture.

Shiraz is the highest profile and best Australian red wine. If Shiraz is produced in Australia or South Africa, then it is known as Shiraz. But when it comes from France, the United States, Argentina or Chile, then it is called as Syrah. These wines are rich and masculine wines which require several years of maturity to subdue their strong tannins. Shiraz grape consists of a very deep purple color. During the year 1832, Shiraz was produced in Australia and since then it has been cultivated there.

The name Shiraz has been derived from the name of city “Shiraz” where the wine making process is believed to be originated around seven thousand years back. The grape Shiraz has been brought to southern France by Guy De’Sterimberg after visiting Iran during the crusades. He became the hermit and developed a vineyard on the hill near his house in Rhode River Valley. Therefore the wine is also known as Hermitage.

The Shiraz grape makes a wonderful, dry red label table wine all on its own. It can also be combined with other grapes in order to create a fuller effect. The Shiraz grape can be used in many ways, like, it can be used to prepare port wine and to create a red sparkling wine, most commonly known as Sparkling Shiraz.

Because of full bodies nature, Shiraz wines have a very powerful aromas and flavors. On the basis of weather or soil nature, Shiraz tones and flavors can change, and as such producing different wines between their regions of origin. The most famous Australian Shiraz are Lindemans and Jacobs Creek.

Shiraz is a very rich and intense wine which will remind you of raspberry and cedar. It is a wine which is basically meant to be drunk when the wine is young, preferable within the first five years after bottling. The Shiraz wine is a great compliment to variety of foods. The wine is significant for it’s robust flavor or rich texture. To enjoy the Shiraz, it can be drink along with some meat food items like beef, lamb, duck or bear.
